50's labyrinth pattern design

Boombomb pattern - 50's labyrinth pattern design

For LBD course - University of Ferrara - I had to invent a pattern with 50's style, based on themes and ideas of that period.
Here is the main tile of the pattern.
Inspiration

The main theme of the pattern is "bombs and atoms" because 50's are also called "atomic age".
After the atomic bombs, people believe that atomic energy could be the future.
For style inspiration, I got a look to the characteristics of the patterns of Charles and Ray Eames.
Then I looked for alternatives from other authors.
For pattern elements, I started my research getting a look to 50’s patterns, iconic objects (interior designs of kitchens and canteens, fridges, tables etc), music and movies.
I discovered an image which was printed on a magazine during 50’s.
The title of the article below is “What does Atomic Energy really mean to you?”
For people of 50’s there are maybe two main kind of opinion: the first is positive and talks about clean and unlimited energy;
the second is negative and talks about war, bombs, fear and death.

I decided to follow the second kind of opinion, so I represented bombs and atoms connected each other.

While getting a look to the style of the patterns of that years, I understood that shapes are not regular and precisely made. The style is quite flat and gives the idea of something invented without reason.

All the colors I chose for the color palette are selected from the Casablanca movie poster.
Casablanca is a cult movie of the 40’s and 50’s which represents well the USA of that period.
Orange bomb is bigger because it’s both the biggest bomb really close to explode and the closest to the observer. The dark green one has the common color of bombs while the light green one is like seen from the side exposed to sunlight. The brown one is the bomb seen from the darker side or from the bottom.
Other big bombs are less important than the orange one because I wanted to guide the user to that specific point.
Atoms are drawn as circles with yellow-green fill. Some lines (both cut and complete) and curved shapes are placed on the top of the fill: they belong to japanese and asiatic culture.
My main idea is to show a bomb rain from the top view, which is composed by a lot of bombs with different colors falling down.
These all emit atoms and electricity particles. Atoms and bombs are connected by electricity "wires".
These wires are the lines in between the bombs
